Encryption of data is the process of altering the data using complex mathematical algorithms and a key.  Data can only be decrypted by using the correct key with the algorithm.  Encryption is the key to both the authentication of parties in a transaction and the protection of information as it is sent across the Internet.

The industry has settled on the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) as the mechanism to provide this authentication and protection.  SSL uses digital certificates which are issued by trusted authorities.  To get a certificate a digital request must be generated, a request made to an authority, and then the resulting certificate must be installed on the computer supporting your site.
